Plot summary

Bata Stojković as Ilija Čvorović

Ilija Čvorović (Bata Stojković), a former Stalinist, is contacted by the police to routinely answer questions about his sub-tenant, a businessman, who spent twenty years living in Paris, and now has returned to Belgrade to open a tailor shop. Following the interview, Čvorović is convinced that his sub-tenant represents a great threat to national security and decides to take matters into his own hands, thus beginning his own surveillance operation against the innocent man. The arrival of a modern man from a capitalist country has clearly provoked Čvorović, who perceives his sub-tenant as a threat to the socialist system. He convinces his wife that their sub-tenant is a spy and begins stalking him, his paranoia growing with each passing day. Eventually, he bars his house, buys a guard dog, arms himself with munition, and even gets help from his brother, both of them becoming convinced that capitalist assassins are after them.

Awards

Balkanski špijun took home two awards in 1984 at the Pula Film Festival including the Golden Arena award and the "Best Actor" award, which went to Danilo Stojković for his portrayal of Ilija Čvorović.
