Ballans is a commune in the Charente-Maritime department in southwestern France. It is in Ballans that Richard I of England fought against his father, Henry II, on 4th July 1189 and became King two days later. With the help of King Philip, Richard I defeated his father in Ballans and was then announced heir to the English throne. Henry retreated his ailing body to Chinon where he died and Richard became King of England, Count of Anjou and Duke of Normandy.
