Ballet Sopianae

Hungarian modern ballet troupe founded in 1960 by the dancer Imre Eck and attached to the opera house in Pécs. In the first year of the company's existence Eck produced fourteen one-act ballets; he eventually choreographed more than a hundred. The Hungarian choreographer Sándor Tóth enjoyed a lasting success with his ballet What Is Under Your Head? (mus. Joszef Kincses, 1964) and went on to contribute many more works to the repertoire, including the full-length Romeo and Juliet (1980). In 1992 Istvan Herczog became artistic director.
