Bampton is a village and civil parish in the Eden District of Cumbria, England, on the edge of the Lake District National Park. The parish had a population of 283 according to the 2001 census. The parish includes the villages of Bampton and Bampton Grange.
Until 2005 Bampton had a village school, which closed due to lack of children.
The village of Bampton centres around Bampton Village Store Bed & Breakfast, the Mardale Inn, garage and caravan site.
Also within the village is the traditional red telephone box used in the 1980s cult classic movie Withnail & I. In February 2009, Sebastian Hindley, the landlord of the Mardale Inn purchased nearby Sleddale Hall which features in the movie as 'Uncle Monty's Cottage'.
There is a book called "Ploughing in Latin" that has been written about Bampton.
