is a common journalistic word, ideally short for headlines, for 'prohibit' or 'make illegal'; as such, and because of its staccato effect in speech, it permeates everyday language. In earlier periods it meant 'to summon' and 'to curse'. In the mid-20th century, the slogan ban the bomb (i.e. the nuclear bomb) gave it a special currency. It is interesting to note that one of the most common collocates of ban given in the Old English (up to 1150)C is marriage (not the institution as a whole but interracial, same-sex, and other socially controversial forms). Other things that have been banned or been under threat of banning include abortion, cloning, discrimination, foxhunting, landmines, smoking in public places, and symbolic items of dress such as headscarves and the Muslim hijab.

Investopedia Financial Dictionary:

Bank-Owned Life Insurance - BOLI

Top

A form of life insurance purchased by banks where the bank is the beneficiary, and/or owner. This form of insurance is a tax shelter for the administering bank, as it is a tax-free funding scheme for employee benefits.

Investopedia Says:
Banks use BOLI contracts to fund ever-increasing employee benefits at a much cheaper rate. The process works like this: the bank sets up the contract, and then makes payments into a specialized fund set aside as the insurance trust. All employee benefits that need to be paid to particular employees covered under the plan are paid out from this fund.

All premiums paid into the fund, as well as all capital appreciation, are tax free for the bank. Therefore, banks can use the BOLI system to fund employee benefits on a tax-free basis.
