Bandar bin Abdulaziz was born in 1923.[1] His mother was a Moroccan concubine, Bazzah. His full brother is late Prince Fawwaz. Bandar is the eleventh son of King Abdulaziz.[2]
Reluctance to partake in government may reflect why Bandar stepped from the royalty succession. The other reason may be that his mother is a Moroccan.[3] On the other hand, he was frequently considered to have weak and negligible character, leading to be excluded from political discourse of the Kingdom.[2]
However, these facts do not mean that Prince Bandar caused family disputes in relation to succession. Opposition to Prince Sultan’s appointment as second deputy prime minister by King Fahd came in particular from two half brothers, Prince Musaid and Prince Bandar, both of whom, like King Abdullah, were born in 1923 and therefore, were older than Prince Sultan, who was reportedly born in 1924.[3]
The protestations of Prince Musaid could be ignored because it was his son who had assassinated King Faisal. But the interests of Prince Bandar were more difficult to disregard. Not only did he want to be the next in line but he also wanted to have Prince Sultan’s job as minister of defense and aviation.[3]
As a result, a family dispute developed, and Bandar bin Abdulaziz's claim concerning the defense ministry was ultimately rejected due to the fact that he had no previous administrative experience. But, as compensation, two of his sons were given important jobs: Mansour bin Bandar was made the commander of the Jeddah Air Base and Faisal bin Bandar the governor of Al-Qassim Province.[3]
Although Bandar bin Abdulaziz has not held any governmental or military position throughout his life, his sons have served in both posts. His son, Prince Faisal, was previously deputy governor of Asir Province.[4] He has been the governor of Al-Qassim Province since 1992.
His other son Prince Abdulaziz is deputy chief of Intelligence Presidency.[5] His another son, Prince Mansour, is an air force officer.[3] He served as the commander of the F-15 squadron at the Dhahran airbase in early 1980's.[4] It is reported that Prince Mansour had intense business contacts with Prince Turki bin Nasser while both serving in the royal air force. It is further argued that Mansour bin Bandar declined the change of his post as the base commander in Taif due to his business activities in the Eastern Province.[4]
Khalid bin Bandar is also a military officer, specifically Lieutenant General and commander of Royal Land Forces.[6] He served in the G3 armor corps at the Saudi Arabian Land Forces (SALF) in early 1980's.[4]
In accordance with both family and tribal tradition, Bandar bin Abdulaziz is believed to enjoy a great deal of influence in the Kingdom.[7]
