Bank Quality

Bonds given one of the top four ratings by bond rating firms, for example, a Standard & Poor's rating of BBB or better. Commercial banks are permitted to purchase these securities, also known as Investment Grade bonds, for their own account. These bonds also are considered acceptable investments for fiduciaries, such as trust departments and pension funds. Bonds with a lower rating are known collectively as Junk Bonds and are considered speculative investments.
