(hydrology) Water absorbed in the permeable bed and banks of a lake, reservoir, or stream.


Water held in the river bank which may contribute to stream flow, but, in arid conditions, may cause a decrease in discharge as water percolates from the river to the banks. This decrease has to be taken into account when increasing river flows by adding water from reservoirs.
