Bank Street College of Education, or simply Bank Street is located in Morningside Heights, Manhattan, in New York City. The college is a specialized institution offering graduate degrees in education. It operates The Bank Street School for Children which follows the same philosophies as the graduate school and the Family Center, a non-profit, inclusive child care center and home- and community-based special education program. The college gets its name from its former location on Bank Street in Greenwich Village. It moved to its current location in the early 1970s.

History
Bank Street was founded in 1916 by Lucy Sprague Mitchell as the "Bureau of Educational Experiments". (Mitchell was the first Dean of Women at the University of California, Berkeley). Its original focus was the study of child development and education, but, after two years, it was clear that actual living subjects, i.e. children, were needed, so in 1918 a nursery school was opened. This nursery school is the direct predecessor of today's School for Children. It wasn't until the 1930s that Bank Street began to formally train teachers, the start of today's Bank Street College of Education.
In 1965, Bank Street developed the "Bank Street Readers" line of books, which were unique due to their featuring of racial diversity and urban people of contemporary culture. Also in the 1960s, the Bank Street faculty played an important role in the creation of the federal Head Start program.
Current programs
Bank Street is known for its progressive educational approach, and is widely regarded as training grounds for the best private and public school teachers in New York. Bank Street College has three program areas: The Graduate School of Education, Children's Programs, and the Division of Continuing Education. Combining current scholarship on child-centered approaches, psychological development, and practical experience, Bank Street attracts students who are interested in current and effective approaches in a changing world. Children's programs consist of The School for Children, an independent school, Nursery to 8th grade, and the Family Center, serving children six months to five years old. The school works with the Center Against Domestic Violence on a joint program to prevent relationship abuse in early development. The Division of Continuing Education is the outreach arm of the College, delivering a diverse set of programs and services for children, families, and educators (http://www.bankstreet.edu/ce/). The Bank Street Bookstore specializes in children's books and educational materials for children and educators, and is considered one of the best children's bookstores in the city.
