Banpei-kun RX (ばんぺいくんRX Banpei-kun āru ekkusu?) is a humanoid robot in the anime/manga series Oh My Goddess!, designed and built by Skuld.[1]
Banpei-kun's primary function is to guard the temple, originally from Marller, however, this has expanded to include any threat the demons send, and even to 'protecting' Belldandy from Keiichi Morisato. Banpei has gradually gained many new abilities as Skuld continues to create new add-ons or new functionality for him. Of the latter the most commonly used is a motorcycle form, which he commonly takes either to travel faster or to carry Skuld if she needs to get somewhere quickly. Originally, he required a direct power connection via an external cable but was later given a battery. This allows him to travel anywhere for extended periods of time; however, when the battery runs low Banpei has to shut down and enter memory preservation mode.
Banpei's program continues to evolve on its own: Banpei gained sentience, an appreciation for life and, after meeting Sigel, the ability to love. Even though Sigel is not interested in Banpei, he is not disheartened, and spends a great deal of time and energy trying to get her to appreciate him; he will also not hesitate to risk serious damage to himself if only to help her. His emotional circuit will work at varying degrees, from being completely shut off, to being almost alive; in recent times it has gained stability, ensuring that he remains 'alive' at all times. Unable to express emotion, Banpei will at times use a permanent marker to draw what he is feeling on his face: a tear for sadness, a furrowed brow and clenched teeth for anger.
His primary weapons include a staff, which is mainly used for threatening Keiichi, as well as speakers and a back-mounted rocket launcher. The speakers blast rock music (disco in the Dark Horse translation), whilst the launcher fires lucky charms; both are the Goddesses' primary weapons against Marller. There have at times been weapons temporarily added, once by Banpei himself, but they are only for specific purposes.
Skuld has invented a mini version of Banpei-kun, known as Mimawari-kun: while Banpei defends the outside, Mimawari is intended to defend the inside. Mimarari-kun seems to normally be hidden, as they are rarely seen, however, if the main Banpei unit is stopped while in level 6 (Anti-Enemy), a vast number of Mimararis will enter level 7 (All-Attack Mode): "Everything automatically goes into indiscriminate attack mode." They will seemingly appear from nowhere and attack anyone on sight --- this extends to the Goddesses, and even Skuld herself.
