Banu Mustaliq
Banu Mustaliq is an Arabic sub-clan Banu Khuza'a, an Azdi Qahtani clan allied to Quraish tribe.
History
They occupied the territory of Qadid on the Red Sea shore between Jeddah and Rabigh
The Banu al Mustaliq, a sub-tribe of Khuza'a had been subject to a pre-emptive attack by Muhammad In the month of Sha'ban of the 6th year of the Hijra (628 A.D). Muhammad received news that the tribe was gathering together against the Muslims under the leadership of al-Harith ibn Abu Dirar. He therefore set out from Medina and led a campaign against the tribe. The Banu Mustaliq was engaged in combat at a watering place of theirs called al-Muraysi. They were soundly defeated.
Among the captives taken by the Muslims was Juwayriya, the daughter of the Mustaliq's slain chief al-Harith. She initially fell among the booty of Muhammad's companion Thabit b. Qays b. Al-Shammas.
According to the Guillaume translation Ibn Ishaq's seerat Rasul Allah (p.492); Juwayriya felt troubled at having been consigned to the lot of Thabit and sought a deed of redemption from Muhammad. Her encounter with Muhammad is narrated in a hadith recounted by Aisha who observed that Muhammad was visibly aroused at Juwayriya's presence. Muhammad proposed to marry her and as a result freed her from the bondage of Thabit and consequently ameliorated the condition of her captured tribe.
The incident at al-Muraysi is significant in seerat tradition as it illustrated an instance of the mutinous feelings of the "disaffected". It sets the scene for Abdullah Ibn Ubeyy's remark that momentarily created a wedge between the factions of Muhammad's army.
The aftermath of the incident with the Banu Mustaliq also includes the incident at Ifk where Aisha's sexual fidelity was subject to scandal.
