The Swedish Rail Administration (Swedish: Banverket) is a government agency that owns and maintains virtually all railway lines in Sweden. It was formed in 1988 when Statens Järnvägar was split, leaving Statens Järnvägar as mainly a train operator and real estate owner, only to be split again in 2001. Its headquarters is located in Borlänge; acting director general is Minoo Akhtarzand.
It has some administrative divisions and separately a production division, Banverket Produktion. The administrative divisions plan the railway construction and maintenance.
The Banverket Produktion acts in competition with private companies with actual construction and maintenance of railway lines. Banverket Produktion is a non-subsided profitmaking company and the Banverket administrative divisions shall not favor Banverket Produktion over competitors.
The Swedish Railway Inspectorate (Järnvägsinspektionen) was a part of Banverket until 2004, when the Swedish Rail Agency (Järnvägsstyrelsen) was formed, taking over its responsibilities. The Swedish Rail Agency changed name to Swedish Transport Agency (Transportstyrelsen) in 2009 after taking over road, aviation and shipping responsibilities.
