Bar

Built as a fortification on the coast against the Avars, hence its original name from which the present name has evolved. It has also been suggested that it means 'Opposite Bari', the Italian port. Bar was under Venetian rule in 1443–1571 and Ottoman Turkish in 1571–1878.
