It is an interesting fact (and one probably worthy of further research) that some of the best films about North American Jews (Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz, The Mad Adventures of Rabbi Jacob) have emanated from Canada. Produced in Ottawa through the auspices of the National Film Board of Canada, Bar Mitzvah is a straightforward account of the centuries-old Jewish rite of passage. The first part of the film follows a young Bar Mitzvah candidate as he prepares for the ceremony, attending Hebrew school, consulting with his rabbi, etc. The ritual itself is then presented in all its solemnity and splendor, followed by a lively party in honor of the candidate. Running a swift 10 minutes, Bar Mitzvah serves as an excellent primer on this traditional ceremony for non-Jewish filmgoers. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
