Barante, Guillaume-Prosper Brugière, baron de (1782-1866). Best remembered for his Histoire des ducs de Bourgogne (1824-6), Barante occupies an important position among the French historians of the Restoration. In 1808 he published a Tableau de la littérature française au XVIIIe siècle, while as late as 1851-3 he brought out a history of the Revolutionary Convention. His political writings are of interest to students of Restoration liberal thought.
