German Literature Companion:

Barbara Schulthess

Schulthess, Barbara (Zurich, 1745-1818, Zurich), née Wolf, married David Schultheß of Zurich. Goethe met her in 1775 on his first Swiss journey, renewed the acquaintance in 1779, called on her on his return from Italy in 1788, and met her for the last time in 1797. The copy of Goethe's novel Wilhelm Meisters Theatralische Sendung, which was discovered in December 1909, was among papers belonging to her and preserved by her descendants. It has been said that she was the model for Nachodine (also known as ‘das nußbraune Mädchen’, Susanne, and ‘die Gute-Schöne’) in Wilhelm Meisters Wanderjahre.
