Although Shakespeare might appreciate the curriculum, Bard College is not named for the Bard of Avon. Founded in 1860 by John Bard, the school grants liberal arts degrees and provides a classical education. Bard's total enrollment of 1,600 includes some 200 graduate students. First-year students are required to take a three-week Workshop in Language and Thinking that emphasizes the connection between expression and thought. Students must also complete a year-long senior project that is reviewed by faculty members. Donald Fagen and Walter Becker of the band Steely Dan both attended Bard (Fagen is an alum; Becker did not graduate) and penned the song "My Old School" as a sardonic tribute to their alma mater.
