Barford is a village and civil parish in the English county of Norfolk, situated some 4 miles (6 km) north of Wymondham and 8 miles (13 km) west of Norwich.[1]

The civil parish has an area of 4.38 km2 and in the 2001 census had a population of 508 in 201 households. For the purposes of local government, the parish falls within the district of South Norfolk.[2]

Barford is currently undergoing a scoping survey for a major energy supplier, with a view to building a 30 acre (350 sq.m) electrical substation on land just outside the village as an alternative to the Wramplingham site. This land is immediately adjacent to the B1108, and slopes down to the River Tiffey. A substation on this land would dominate the landscape and would clearly be seen from Wramplingham village, and the roundtower church of Wramplingham. It would also be seen by people driving along the Watton Road

Wramplingham is also undergoing the same threat; scoping is being carried out with a view to an alternative siting of a 30 acre substation located immediately adjacent to this attractive conservation village. The site will be clearly visible from the round-tower church of Wramplingham, and from land used by the villagers and ramblers for walking. The peace and tranquility of Wramplingham village will be broken, and the landscape will be changed forever.

The substation at Mangreen, near the A47 Norwich bypass and just off the A140, is 8 acres in size. It has a two storey building which is dominated by pylons, cables, and large sustation paraphernalia. This is 4 times smaller than the proposed substation at either Wramplingham or Barford. This substation is going to be built to store energy from the planned offshore Dudgeon windfarm. It will be able to store enough energy for at least 230,000 homes, potentially 440,000 homes.

There is an abundance of documentation regarding siting and construction of offshore windfarms and the impact on crustacean lobsters and marine invertebrates. This is a marked contrast to how little documented research there is on the web regarding the siting of substations and due consideration to the human species.

Wramplingham and Barford residents are planning to oppose the siting of this substation near their villages.
