the pressure exerted by the atmosphere at a given place and time. It is often expressed in terms of the supported height of a column of mercury, usually measured in millimetres. The SI unit is the pascal. Other non-SI units frequently used in addition to the millimetre of mercury are the atmosphere, the bar, and the torr.
