Straussenburg, Baron Arthur Arz von (1857-1935), Austro-Hungarian general. Having joined the army in 1878, he began WW I as a divisional commander, but by 1916 was commanding an army. He was chosen by the new Habsburg emperor to replace Conrad von Hötzendorf as the Austro-Hungarian CGS on 1 March 1917. Straussenburg was not chosen because of his military brilliance, rather Emperor Karl wanted a man who would not overshadow him in his efforts to direct the empire's war on his own. He served loyally in this capacity until the monarchy was dissolved at the end of the war.
