Creams, ointments, or sprays used to protect the skin against water-soluble irritants (e.g. detergents, breakdown products of urine). Barrier preparations often contain a silicone (such as dimeticone). They are used for preventing and treating such conditions as napkin rash and pressure sores and for protecting the skin around a stoma.
