USA (Rhode Island): originally Swansea, it was renamed in 1717 after John Shute (1678–1734), Viscount Barrington, an eminent English lawyer and champion of religious freedom. The town was transferred from Massachusetts to Rhode Island Colony in 1746, becoming part of Warren. However, in 1770, Warren was split, the western half being named Barrington.
