Biography

Best known for his screenplays and teleplays, Barry Beckerman was also a studio executive and producer. He spent much of his career working with Warner Bros. having joined the studio's creative affairs department as a supervisor of acquisition and development during the early '70s. At that time, Beckerman worked closely with such directors as Francis Ford Coppola, George Lucas, and John Milius, as well as with studio head John Calley. He left Warners for Polygram in 1979, but returned to Warners and Sony Pictures as a consultant. As a scenarist, Beckerman penned the Emmy-nominated, Golden Globe-winning script for the television movie Raid on Entebbe (1977) and for the feature film Shamus (1973), which starred Burt Reynolds. As a producer, Beckerman was behind John Milius' Red Dawn (1984). Beckerman died of cancer on July 30, 1996. He was 53. ~ Sandra Brennan, All Movie Guide
