(b Hamburg, 1678; d there, 15 Oct 1721). German lawyer, poet and aesthetician. He was a leading librettist for the Hamburg Opera, writing texts for Keiser and Graupner. He insisted that opera must be a distinct and realistic genre, not simply spoken drama set to music.
