Basaveshwaranagar, a locality of Bangalore, is an old extension that has turned into a bustling hub with more than 200,000 people living and working here. It is named after Basaveshwara who was a profound thinker, a great social reformer, a great saint and a religious teacher.He is also called Basavanna and is regarded as the originator of Lingayatism.
Basaveshwaranagar subsumes several sub-localities like Kamalanagar, Sharada Colony, Karnataka Housing Board (KHB) Colony, Kamakshipalya, Kurubarahalli, Saneguruvanahalli,SBI Officers colony, Nagapura, Manjunatha Nagar, Shiva Nagar, Bhimajyothinagar and Agrahara Dasarahalli.
There are several landmarks such as Pavithra Paradise, Global Logica Software Technologies, 8th Main, Water Tank Road and Shankar Mutt all of which are off Basaveshwaranagar Main Road in one stretch of about 2 kilometres.
Global Logica Software Technologies, situated near to Pavithra Paradise, is a growing Software development company. The Energetic Embedded Development Team of Global Logica did Wireless Car Racing project for Team46 racing. The Team include Mr. Vijay Krishna, Mr. Senthil raj, Mr. Rajreddy as Embedded Developers and Mr. Shailendra Singh as Front end Application Developer.
Though essentially a residential area, there are several commercial establishments which makes Basaveshwaranagar a self-contained township. It is well served by buses and is about 5 km from the Kempegowda Bus Station and Bangalore City Railway Station. The famous Dr. M. C. Modi Charitable Eye Hospital is located here apart from hospitals like Panecea, Pristine, and the Chord Road Hospital. Pizza Hut, Cafe Coffee Day is located near Shankar Mutt circle. Gramya is a new store located on Basaveshwaranagar Main Road near the Magadi road, making available eco-friendly ethnic lifestyle products and foods from rural SHGs and artisans. Shaadi Point, a matrimonial center has an outlet near the ICICI ATM. Basaveshwaranagar also has 'The loot', a mini family centred mall and a 'Nilgiris' outlet near Pavithra Paradise just opposite to Highway Chicken Palace.
Basaveshwaranagar also was known to have a 400 year old tree "The Big Banyan Tree - Dodda Aalada Mara" which was a home for hundreds of monkeys & as a known public park in the vicinity. The tree met its death in 2009 when it cracked up in the middle of its main trunk & fell apart. It has now been replaced with new ones. The park has a jogging/walking tracks, badminton courts . They are also sessions for senior people under the big tree like yoga , laugh to a health life.
Basaveshwaranagar hosts good theatres like Veerabhadreshwara and Pushpanjali and also has few shoppping malls. Many Scientists from ISRO like M.G. Raykar reside over here and is known to be a residence of well learned scholars.
