Bastiodon (トリデプス Toridepusu?, Trideps in original Japanese language versions) are one of the 493 fictional species of Pokémon creatures from the multi-billion-dollar[1] Pokémon media franchise – a collection of video games, anime, manga, books, trading cards and other media, created by Satoshi Tajiri. Bastiodon is famous for being one of the Pokémon revealed before the Japanese release of Pokémon Diamond and Pearl. The purpose of Bastiodon in the games, anime and manga, as with all other Pokémon, is to battle both wild Pokémon, untamed creatures encountered while the player passes through various environments, and tamed Pokémon owned by Pokémon trainers.[2]

Bastiodon's English name is derived from the words bastion and don, a word meaning tooth common in the names of dinosaurs. Its Japanese name is a portmanteau of the Japanese word for fortress ( toride?) and the "-ceratops" suffix used to describe prehistoric horned dinosaurs such as the famous Triceratops.

Bastiodon shares a similar trait to Bongorongo, the boss of The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass as the two have armored heads that no attack can get through, but both weak to rear sided attacks. They are both almost look-alikes.

Biological characteristics

Bastiodon resembles a stylized Ceratopsid dinosaur (eg. a Triceratops) with some aspects of a castle wall or bastion and a bulldozer. Its head is shaped like a large shield and resembles a fortress tower, with yellow patterns resembling windows. It has hard 'boots' on its legs, horns on its head, and spikes on its back. Its mouth stretches across its face and is protected by its huge jaw.

Bastiodon is evolved from Shieldon, who, as in previous generations, is revived from a fossil; like Omanyte, Kabuto, Aerodactyl, Lileep, Anorith, and Shieldon's Pokémon Diamond counterpart, Cranidos.

It lived in partly forested areas as it cleared trees as it ate vegetation creating new plains much like real some real dinosaurs did roughly 100 million years ago. Herds would form a blockade with their shield faces to young and nesting sites. Nests were small holes made on the ground that helped prevent eggs from over heating in the sun. It is characterized by, as well as named for, the shield on its face which somewhat resembles a castle tower.

In the video games

Bastiodon is one of many new Pokémon to have made its first appearance in the release of Pokemon Diamond and Pearl for the Nintendo DS.

Bastiodon is used by the sixth Gym Leader of Sinnoh, Byron, at level 39.

Bastiodon can only be obtained by revival from a fossil exclusively found in Pokémon Pearl. Its counterpart, Rampardos, can only be obtained in Pokémon Diamond.

Bastiodon's stats include superior Defenses (among the highest in the game) but very poor offensive capabilities.

There are currently no Bastiodon cards available outside of Japan. However, one Bastiodon card is yet to be released outside of Japan:

  • Mystery of the Lakes, as Bastiodon Lv.51, a Metal-type card (DPBP #470)

Bastiodon will also be featured by one of the theme decks.
