An administrative region and coastal plain lying on the Gulf of Oman and meaning 'stomach' from baṭn since the Omanis liken the Jabal Akhdar 'Green Mountain' to the backbone of Oman with the Batinah as the 'stomach'; additionally, baṭin means 'inner' in the sense here perhaps of 'accessible'. On the other, western, side of the mountains is the Dhārihah 'outer' and here representing the 'back'.
