'(Place of) the Battle'. It is named after the Battle of Hastings between the English and Normans, which took place here, some 10 miles (16 km) north-west of Hastings, in 1066. An abbey was first built here to commemorate the battle. According to tradition, the high altar of the abbey marked the spot where Harold II (c.1020–66), the last Anglo-Saxon King of England (1066), placed his standards.
