La Batailge
'(Place of) the Battle'. It is named after the Battle of Hastings between the English and Normans, which took place here, some 10 miles (16 km) north-west of Hastings, in 1066. An abbey was first built here to commemorate the battle. According to tradition, the high altar of the abbey marked the spot where Harold II (
c.1020–66), the last Anglo-Saxon King of England (1066), placed his standards.
