Plot

In this rabid anti-communist science fiction tract, scientist Arnold Kramer (Peter Arne) convinces the Pentagon that the communist Chinese are digging a complex series of tunnels from China and beneath the United States, from which they plan to detonate nuclear weapons and destroy the free world. Kramer enlists Commander Jonathan Shaw (Kerwin Mathews) to assist Kramer in trying to prevent the literal and final collapse of the U.S.A. Shaw sets up shop inside an extinct Hawaiian volcano, attempting to destroy the main supply tunnel coming from China. But before the team can complete their mission, they are captured y the evil Chinese. Now it is up to Shaw and Kramer to escape the clutches of the Chinese in order to activate a nuclear stockpile inside the tunnel and incinerate the Chinese forces. ~ Paul Brenner, Rovi

Battle Beneath the Earth (1967) is a British sci-fi-espionage movie starring Kerwin Matthews[1] . It was released by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. The film also features character actor Ed Bishop, who later went on to star in the Gerry Anderson cult-TV show UFO.

The film is remarkable for its politically incorrect depiction of the Chinese, played mostly by English actors.[who?] The action scenes―especially for a low budget matinée programmer―are brisk and occasionally bloody.

Plot

The plot involves rogue elements of the communist Chinese army who use fantastic burrowing machines in an effort to place atomic bombs under major U.S. cities. The U.S. Navy sends troops underground to combat them.

Release

The movie received a VHS home-video release in the early 1980s. It was also a staple of afternoon-movie or Saturday-morning Creature Features-type TV programs before the historic sale of the MGM/UA film library. Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer originally handled North American theatrical distribution

It was released on DVD by Warner Home Video on 7/29/08, as a Best Buy exclusive double feature with The Ultimate Warrior (1975 film). ISBN# 1-4198-6943-4, UPC# 883929023790.

Score

The film -interestingly- features a fast-paced 'crime-jazz' musical score.
