Auldearn, battle of, 1645. Montrose was unable to follow up his great victory at Inverlochy in February 1645 when many of his followers returned home. This time a covenanting army under Sir John Hurry tried to surprise Montrose on 9 May at Auldearn, east of Nairn. The issue was decided by a spirited cavalry counter-attack by the Gordons and Hurry fled to Inverness.

The Battle of Auldearn, an engagement of the Wars of the Three Kingdoms, took place on May 9, 1645, in and around the village of Auldearn in Nairn. It was a victory for Montrose and Alasdair MacColla, heading the royalist forces, over a Covenanter army under the command of Sir John Hurry. There is a Bagpipe Piobaireachd to commemorate this battle, Blár Allt Earrann.
