Battle of Chickasaw Bayou

A Confederate victory in December 1862 that frustrated Ulysses S. Grant's attempts to take Vicksburg by the direct approach. Forces under William T. Sherman, after some preparations, made a frontal asault on the heavily defended Walnut Hills area of Warren County, Mississippi, which was rebuffed with heavy Union casualties.
