battle of Fethanleag

British History: battle of Fethanleag

Fethanleag, battle of, c. 584. The site is disputed but possibly at Stoke Lyne, near Bicester (Oxon.), between the West Saxons and the Britons. Although the West Saxonking Ceawlin is reported to have taken towns and considerable booty, he returned home in anger. It seems likely that the West Saxons suffered a check to their westward expansion.
