Battle of Jonesboro
A Civil War battle fought on August 31 and September 1, 1864, in Jonesboro, Georgia, a rail hub whose control was essential for the Confederacy to defend Atlanta. Massive Union forces under Gen. William T. Sherman overcame Confederate forces under Gens. Patrick Cleburn and William Hardee. The Union victory precipitated the evacuation of Atlanta.
