Battle of Kwajalein

(February 1944) the first prewar capture of a Japanese territory by American troops. Noted for intensive pre-invasion bombardment directed by Adm. Chester W. Nimitz, Kwajalein cost less than 500 American lives compared to over 7, 000 by the Japanese.
