Maidstone, battle of, 1648. Although the Kentish royalists in 1648 had assembled an army of 11, 000 men, they dispersed them among several towns, leaving only 2, 000 in Maidstone. Sir Thomas Fairfax, after assembling a 4, 000-strong parliamentary force, attacked the town on 1 June. Under heavy rain the defenders were eventually overpowered.

The Battle of Maidstone was a battle in the Second English Civil War (1648). In June, a Royalist uprising broke out in Kent. The Cavaliers captured Gravesend and Maidstone. Sir Thomas Fairfax marched on Maidstone and recaptured the city. The Royalist forces attacked the parliamentary troops at Maidstone on June 24. The battle resulted in a parliamentary victory with over 800 Royalists dead. The battle ended the uprising.
