Battle of Mechanicsville

US Military Dictionary: Battle of Mechanicsville

The second of the Seven Days' battles in Virginia during the Civil War. On June 26, 1862, Union forces, under Gen. George B. McClellan and Brig. Gen. Fitz John Porter, rebuffed a series of assaults by Gen. Robert E. Lee's army, which suffered heavy casualties. Approaching Confederate reinforcements, however, forced Porter and McClellan south of the James River, at Gaines' Mill.
