Battle of Okinawa Begins
Apr 1, 1945. On Easter Sunday, the US 10th Army began operation Iceberg, the invasion of the Ryukyu Islands of Okinawa. Ground troops numbering 180,000 plus 368,000 men in support services made a total of 548,000 troops involved—the biggest amphibious operation of the Pacific war.
