Southwold or Sole Bay, battle of, 1672. Naval engagement off the Suffolk coast in the third Anglo-Dutch War on 7 June 1672 between de Ruyter with 91 ships and a slightly larger Anglo-French force, under the command of James, duke of York. De Ruyter lost more ships but the English fleet was badly damaged and Lord Sandwich, admiral of the Blue, drowned.
