BBC Canada is a Canadian English language category 2 digital cable specialty channel. It presents programming from the BBC. Along with BBC Kids, it is a joint venture between CW Media (a division of Canwest and GS Capital Partners) and BBC Worldwide.

Programming

Since BBC Canada is licensed as a Canadian channel, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission's (CRTC) broadcasting regulations require that it carry a quota of Canadian content. In addition to BBC programs, therefore, it also broadcasts a number of Canadian series as well.

BBC Canada is also the only channel in Canada that puts its TV rating on the top-right side of the screen, the opposite of the standard top-left side, as the channel's identifying digital on-screen graphic (DOG) occupies the top-left side, in line with those of several British television channels.

History

Licensed by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) in November 2000 to Alliance Atlantis, the channel was launched on September 7, 2001 under its current name.

On January 18, 2008, a joint venture between Canwest and GS Capital Partners bought Alliance Atlantis and gained AAC's interest in BBC Canada.
