Beachwood is an affluent suburb of Cleveland in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, United States. The population was 11,953 at the 2010 census.

Geography

Beachwood is located at 41°28′56″N 81°30′14″W / 41.48222°N 81.50389°W / 41.48222; -81.50389 (41.482226, −81.504001).[3]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.3 square miles (13.7 km²), of which, 5.3 square miles (13.7 km²) of it is land and 0.19% is water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010:[2] 11,953 (-1.9% change), 5,064 households, and 3,005 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,244.7 people per square mile (866.7/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 77.3% White, 13.7% Black, 7.4% Asian, and 1.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.9% of the population. Beachwood has a plurality of residents who report being of Russian ancestry, with 17% of residents so reporting, the only ancestry reported by over 10% of Beachwood residents.[4]

In the city, the population was spread out with 19.6% under the age of 18, 3.7% from 18 to 24, 17.2% from 25 to 44, 27.2% from 45 to 64, and 32.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 52.5 years. For every 100 females there were 78.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 73.6 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $71,932, and the median income for a family was $103,431. The per capita income for the city was $48,010. 3.7% of the population were below the poverty line. 2.7% of those under the age of 18 and 5.6% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.

Education

The Beachwood education system is a Blue Ribbon awarded school, ranked amongst the top fifty schools in Ohio. Beachwood schools have the advantages of a large tax base and a high percentage of private school students (both religious schools and private academies). All middle school students have their own Apple Computer laptops.

Business

The city is home to University Hospitals Ahuja Medical Center, which opened in 2011.

Beachwood will be the home of Eaton Corporation's new corporate headquarters, which is scheduled to open in late 2012. Other corporate headquarters in the city include Developers Diversified Realty Corporation and Aleris.

Beachwood Place, an upscale shopping mall featuring stores such as Saks Fifth Avenue and Nordstrom, is located in Beachwood.

The Cleveland Jewish News is a weekly Jewish newspaper headquartered in Beachwood.
