Review

Mercury U.K.'s label sampler of Northern white soul, mid-'80s style, was sold for a couple of pounds to increase awareness in several bands that went on to some success (Swing Out Sister, Curiousity Killed the Cat, Wet Wet Wet) and some that didn't (Zerra One and Topper Headon's solo outing). Surprisingly still makes a good listen: half these tracks are "previously unreleased" songs or mixes, and the Sly and Robbie remix of Curiousity's "Ordinary Day" exceeds the one they released as a single a year later. And Swing Out Sister's track "Another Lost Weekend" is a find. Includes fatuous liner notes by various writers for NME and I.D. magazine that are worth a laugh as well. On Hipsway: "Walking on hot stone with a glint in their eye's [sic], they are now thinking of setting the world on fire." Yikes. ~ Ted Mills, Rovi
