Beggar in Purple

  • Release Year: 1920

Plot

A boy begs a wealthy man for work so that he can save his sick mother. The man coldly turns him away and the mother dies. Eighteen years later John Hargrave (Leonard C. Shumway) finds himself in a position to get revenge. He is the head of a paper company, and the wealthy man, Roger Winton (Charles Arling) is his rival. In addition, Winton Jr. (Stanhope Wheatcroft) is Hargrave's rival for the love of Irene Foster (Betty Brice). Irene loves Winton, but loves Hargrave's money even more. When the senior Winton discovers that Hargrave is planning to buy another paper firm, thus squashing his company, he uses his resources to cause labor trouble. Hargrave, however, discovers the plot and puts an end to it. But he finds victory hollow when he learns that Irene is untrue and he is struck blind. His secretary (Ruth King), however, comes through and proves she really loves him. When an accident restores his sight, they are married. This overwrought drama was an average program feature for its day. ~ Janiss Garza, All Movie Guide
