Belletristik

 

Belletristik, German equivalent of belles-lettres, i.e. literature excluding historical, philosophical, and scientific writing. The word first appeared in German in the form Belletrist, ‘writer of belles-lettres’, about 1730. The form Belliteratur occurs in J. M. R. Lenz's Anmerkungen übers Theater (1774).
