Plot

Reflecting studio executives' taste for material that crosses genres, this film from director David Twohy and co-screenwriter Darren Aronofsky mixes the war movie and supernatural thriller genres. After they rescue a trio of survivors that includes a nurse, Claire Page (Olivia Williams), from a British hospital ship sunk by the Nazis, the crew of the American submarine U.S.S. Tiger Shark comes to believe that their vessel is haunted. The unexpected death of their commander forces first officer Lt. Brice (Bruce Greenwood) to take command, trying to avoid a German destroyer on the hunt for his ship, while investigating the series of mysterious incidents that are terrifying his crew. Is the Tiger Shark haunted, or is there something otherworldly inhabiting the waters where the sailors are currently trapped? Originally entitled "Proteus," this project was slated to be Aronofsky's follow-up to Pi (1998), but the writer/director opted to helm Requiem for a Dream (2000) instead. Review

It's too bad this haunted sub thriller got lost in the marketing with Ghost Ship, a similarly-themed effort that opened nearly simultaneously to negative reviews in October of 2002. Director David N. Twohy creates the same eerie vibe of his Pitch Black (the sting rays even make a brief appearance), casting the sets in unsettling, uncertain light and making every character a suspect. The acting is restrained, to the detriment of a few scenes that bog down the pace a bit, but Matt Davis should make sure anyone involved with Indiana Jones sequels sees this -- there are some shots that make him look exactly like a young Harrison Ford. Enemy depth charges and mass paranoia give rise to effective wartime action, but heightening the haunting aspects -- and the unexpected ending -- are Twohy and co-writer Darren Aronofsky's main goal. Thriller, action and horror renters will be on top of Below. ~ Buzz McClain, All Movie Guide

Plot

The USS Tiger Shark is a submarine on patrol in the Atlantic Ocean in 1943. The submarine is ordered to pick up survivors spotted adrift by a British patrol plane. At the wreckage, they retrieve three lone survivors - a British nurse and two sailors, one wounded - of a British hospital ship that was torpedoed several days earlier. After that, the Tiger Shark must avoid a German warship attempting to find and destroy them. The submarine has several encounters with the German warship and suffers heavy damage from depth charges in the process.

The Commanding Officer of the Tiger Shark, Lieutenant Commander Brice (Bruce Greenwood), discovers that the wounded sailor is actually a German POW, Luftwaffe pilot and family man Ben Archerlift and shoots him because he thinks the German has been causing strange noises to attract the German warship. Meanwhile, eerie events begin to manifest themselves and seem to be related to the recent death of the previous captain, Commander Winters. Winters had been killed after the Tiger Shark torpedoed and sank a German ship. Winters had ordered the sub to surface and had then gone topside with his senior officers to make sure the ship had sunk and to see if there were any survivors. According to LT Commander Brice, Winters had wanted a souvenir from the wreck and had fallen and hit his head on the side of the sub while reaching for his souvenir, then fell into the ocean and drowned before he could be rescued.

However, as the eerie events mount - strange voices are heard, a series of mechanical problems keeps the submarine turning back towards the site of the sunken German ship, and crewmen are killed at an alarming rate from various problems - the British nurse and sailor, and one of the junior officers on the Tiger Shark, begin to suspect that more is going on than just mechanical problems. They also begin to question LT Commander Brice's version of how and why Commander Winters died.

It is revealed that three senior officers, Brice, Loomis and Coors, were responsible for the death of Captain Winters. The British hospital ship was mistaken for a German ship and was sunk by the Tiger Shark. The three officers could not afford this blotch on their records and conspired to suppress the story, killing Captain Winters as he tried to save the wounded in the ocean. This is discovered after Coors is mysteriously killed while working on the exterior of the sub, and Loomis drowns after exiting the boat while submerged, in a craze after seeing Winters' ghost on board.

After numerous accidents that completely cripple the boat, everyone on board is killed except for five: Brice, O'Dell, Claire, Stumbo, and eccentric crewman Weird Wally (Zach Galifianakis). After the boat finally surfaces, Brice and Claire face each other down on the surface deck of the disabled submarine. Claire has spotted another ship in the area and tries to get its attention, but Brice holds her at gunpoint. His remorse over the accident overcomes him, and he shoots himself in the head, falling dead into the ocean. The four survivors are picked up by ship spotted by Claire, which turns out to be British. The final shot in the film is of the Tiger Shark sinking away from the surface, to rest next to the British hospital ship on the ocean floor.

Production

The producers used the USS Silversides (SS-236), a World War II-era Gato-class submarine based in Muskegon, Michigan, for exteriors of the "USS Tiger Shark." The sub was towed out into Lake Michigan.

Matthew Leitch and Dexter Fletcher appeared together in the HBO miniseries Band of Brothers, where they were also under the command of an officer named Winters.

Reception

The film gained an approval rating of 63% on Rotten Tomatoes with 41 out of 65 reviews calling it fresh.[1] Reviewers on Metacritic gave a mixed response with a 55% approval rating based on 20 reviews.[2] Below also gained mixed reviews in the press. Entertainment Weekly gave the film a B+ rating, calling it a "handsome, haunting submarine thriller".[3] Edward Guthmann from the San Francisco Chronicle gave a mainly negative review stating that the dialogue was "heavy on sarcasm and puncturing insults, never captures the World War II period but sounds ridiculously anachronistic".[4] Variety Magazine gave the movie a mixed review stating that "the strenuous seriousness the film applies to an idea that is finally silly at its core steadily increases the impression of overwrought artificiality as matters progress".[5]
