Plot

As used here, the phrase "New Europe" is a literal one: in this seven-part BBC miniseries, veteran Monty Python comic Michael Palin tours the countries that freed themselves from the jurisdiction of the Soviet Union - and thus joined the remainder of preexistent "old' Europe - with the fall of the Iron Curtain in the early 1990s. The program operates on the presupposition that most western viewers will be completely unacquainted with such countries as Bosnia, Croatia, Serbia, Slovenia and Macedonia; thus, in each episode, Palin tours a few select Eastern European regions, where he meets and talks with indigenes, studies the buildings and the landscapes, samples the food and essentially uncovers a fascinating series of cultures long "hidden" to the west. Episode four, " Danube to Dnieper," finds funnyman Palin journeying through the Ukraine and Hungary and concluding his destination at the Yalta resort. Highlights includde a visit with a market trader who hails from Leeds, England (and married the daughter of a prime minister); a trip to the House of Terror in Budapest, Hungary and a tour of one of Hortobagy's preeminent national parks. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi
