Benjamin Barker

(b Pontypool, 1776; d Totnes, 28 Feb 1838). Painter and printmaker, brother of (1) Thomas Barker. He was largely self-taught, but his landscape style was more sensitive than that of Thomas (e.g. Landscape with Cattle, c. 1820; Bath, Victoria A.G.). He failed to emulate Thomas's success, although he exhibited frequently in London and the provinces. His volume of 48 aquatint engravings, English Landscape Scenery (1824), is one of his finest works.
