Fairy Tale Companion:

Benjamin Tabart

Tabart, Benjamin (c.1767/8–1833), London bookseller and proprietor of the Juvenile Library, who published many notable children's books including fairy tales, at a time when moral tales and books of instruction prevailed. In 1804 he began issuing a sixpenny series of fairy and popular stories, including tales by Perrault, d'Aulnoy, and from The Arabian Nights, and also versions of chapbook tales such as Valentine and Orson, Fortunatus and Robin Hood. His 1807 publication, The History of Jack and the Beanstalk was perhaps the first time this story had appeared in print. Popular Tales (1804), published in four volumes, included many of these.
