River, Belarus. It is 381 mi (613 km) long and flows southeast into the Dnieper River. During Napoleon's retreat from Moscow in 1812, a bitter engagement was fought on the Byarezina at the crossroads of the river near Barysaw, and Russian forces inflicted enormous losses on Napoleon's army. In 1941 it was the scene of fierce fighting during the German advance on Smolensk.
