If the idea of a Bergknappenlied (Miner's Song, D. 268) set as a quartet for male voices doesn't sound especially appealing, the song won't surprise you. Apparently Schubert had very little idea what a miner's life was actually like because his setting is as close as he ever got to being generic. A stout-hearted vocal melody striding along manfully in duple time, the Bergknappenlied could as easily be a lumberjack song for all the difference it would make. Schubert's Bergknappenlied is as anonymous as the author of the text. ~ James Leonard, Rovi
