Berhtwald(1)
Berhtwald (Beorhtweald, Brihtwald), monk and archbishop of Canterbury 693–731. First known as abbot of Reculver, he became archbishop of Canterbury on the death of Theodore, being consecrated at Lyons by Godwin, its archbishop. Bede describes him as learned in Scripture and ecclesiastical and monastic sciences, although far inferior to his predecessor. During his long rule he was in correspondence with Boniface, Aldhelm, and Wilfrid; towards the last he was at first intransigent, but eventually agreed to the final settlement of 705. Evidence for cult is minimal, being apparently based on a single late calendar of St. Augustine's abbey, Canterbury, where, like his predecessors, he was buried. Feast: 9 January.
